Warhammer is a tabletop game in which two or more players compete against each other using small armies composed of miniature figurines on a standard table that is 6 by 4 feet. The Warhammer game comes with a rule book periodically updated by Games Workshop. The book dictates how the figurines can move around and engage in combat in this world. The outcome of the combat is partially determined by the roll of dice. The game length can typically last a few hours at a time.

The eighth edition of the series supports individual army books for 15 different factions. This includes the Wood Elves, the Dwarfs, High Elves, Beastmen, Bretonnia, Skaven, Tomb Kings, Orcs and Goblins, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, The Empire, the Ogre Kingdoms, the Vampire Counts, and two factions of Chaos. Certain races within the world were discontinued prior to the eighth edition, including the Chaos Dwarfs, the Dogs of War, and the Kislev.
